2015’s Most On-Trend Costumes (For Grownups!)

Who says kids have all the fun? Each year, more grownups have been embracing their inner trick-or-treater by getting garbed in fanciful costumes. And why not? Dressing up is a great way to express a sense of whimsy – and what you’re really thinking all year long.

Here are 2015’s best grown-up Halloween costume trends. Enjoy…and have a spooky, fabulous, trendy Halloween!

1. Funny Emojis

Don’t make us laugh! Oh, okay, go ahead…you know we love it. And so will your friends, who will vote you Best Dressed this Halloween with this awesome costume idea.

Emojis are so easy to recreate: simply draw or paint the emoticon, hole-punch the sides and add string. Slip the mask over your head and you’re ready to go. What to wear on bottom? Try basic black so you don’t detract from the fun happening at face-level.

2. Jurassic World

Owen was the superstar of 2015’s blockbuster Jurassic World, but you can choose to be any character – even a snarling Indominus Rex! Or try the pristine to-the-nines Claire Dearing in her ivory powersuit. Or how about the not-so-on-board Dr. Wu (a reprised role from the original)? Jurassic World possibilities are wide open…you may even try switching genders (for example, if you’re a woman, we’ll bet you’ll look out-of-this-Jurassic world as Owen).

3. Pixar’s Inside Out

Admit it…you’re an adult, but you loved Inside Out too. You’ll be easiest for fellow partygoers to decipher if you dress as one of the most well-known characters, the emotions (Joy, Sadness, Fear, Anger or Disgust).

But don’t stop there if you’re on a creative bent. How about Jangles, one of the Cool Girl emotions or Riley in full-on hockey gear? Then make friends guess and give a prize to the winner (say, a supersize Reese’s).

4. Donald Trump

He made headlines in 2015 – not that he ever escapes the media’s eye (or even tries to). Believe it or not, Trump costumes are even available in a women’s wear variety, so this costume is open to all.

You don’t have to purchase a ready-made costume. Even if your costume-making skills are, well, a bit lacking (or you just don’t have the time to create your own outfit), a business suit and graying-blonde wig will do in a pinch. Just be sure to practice your pointy-finger and pursed lips before leaving for the party.

5. All Things Mario

Originally of Donkey Kong fame, Mario and his buddies are super on-trend for 2015.  And yep, grown-ups wear them too. There are even (yes, really) “sexy Mario” outfits (see image).

Mario is definitely not your only choice – chose the character you love most about the many games in the Mario franchise. Luigi, Yoshi, the Goombah, Princess Peach, Rosalina (Rosie) and Daisy, Bowser and Bowser Jr., Professor E. Gadd and more are all great choices for this fun theme. 6. Minions

They’re oh-so-cute and trendy once again due to the release of Minions. Hunt your local consignment shop or Goodwill for overalls, goggles and a yellow shirt and pull-over hat. Or create your own goggles by painting toilet paper rolls and a strip of fabric elastic, then attaching around your head.

Minions are a unisex costume and instantly identifiable, so go for it! You’ll have even more fun if you choose this as a group costume, plus one friend to dress as Gru.

7. Mad Men

Come on, you KNOW you cried when Mad Men presented its finale this year. But dry those tears: you can reprise any Mad Men role you want with a fun retro Halloween costume!

Luckily, this is another costume choice that can be put together with super-inexpensive pieces. Scope out your local thrift shop for outdated (that’s what you want!) wear, such as a large-flower print dress or cool suit, tie and hat. For women, a simple dress from the Clearance rack and a box of Rit dye in a fab retro color will have you ready to be the hit of the party.

8. Star Wars

It’s baaaaaaaaack…or it will be at Christmastime 2015, but that doesn’t mean you can’t jump on this popular idea now. Be a character from one of the six Star Wars movies you’ve already seen, or check out this preview of Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens for ideas. Taking the family around the block this Halloween? Have each of you dress as a different character.

9. Mad Max

Due to the release of Mad Max: Fury Road, as well as a video game, the road warrior is popular once again. Guys: the girls may need to cover their eyes from the overwhelming sexiness of your costume, but we say the risk is worth it. Women: we know you’ve always secretly wanted to hold a futuristic gun. Here’s your chance! (Or be a soft-and-sexy “wife” in flowing fabric.)

Buy a costume ready-made or piece together your own weathered, futuristic garb with earth-tone materials and a cool jacket.

10. Left Shark

You laughed when you saw them dancing with Katie Perry, but here’s your “aha” moment: go with two friends, have one of you dress as Katie and the other two dress as the now-famous boogying sharks.

If you’re handy, you can sew this yourself, or simply drape blue and white material and hot glue felt eyes and teeth.
