Getting Down with the Halloween Boogie Man

By Screaming Scarecrow Studios

Everybody loves the spooktacular good times of dancing to great tunes at their favourite Halloween party. And the lurking lunatics at Screaming Scarecrow Studios are no different – in fact, in order to make sure there is enough dance floor space at our Halloween party we move all the furniture out of several rooms and into storage! Then we pack the floor with wall to wall dancing guests by playing set after set of great music. Of course there are some classic tunes that any self respecting Halloween party must have on its music playlist.

Could you imagine a Halloween party without hearing either of the following Monster-Hits?

1962′s “Monster Mash” by Bobby (Boris) Picket and the CryptKickers5 – our dance floor always fills to capacity when that famous song bubbles out from our speakers!

Bobby Boris Picket Thriller Tribute

“I was working in the lab late one night
When my eyes beheld an eerie sight
For my monster from his slab began to rise
And suddenly to my surprise
He did the Mash
He did the Monster Mash”

Or how about Warren Zevon’s “Werewolves of London” which was first released in 1978 on his “Excitable Boy” album. This one is just as much of a crowd pleaser and people always sing along at the top of their lungs!

Warren Zevon thriller tribute

“I saw a werewolf with a Chinese menu in his hand
Walking through the streets of Soho in the rain
He was looking for a place called Lee Ho Fook’s
Going to get himself a big dish of beef chow mein
ahwhoooo Werewolves of London ahwhoooo”

There are so many musical greats for us to enjoy at our Halloween parties.

Indeed, we believe that each time we play an iconic song we are actually paying homage to the late great performers who gave them to us – especially on that one night of the year where the veil between the living & the dead becomes thinner. On this very special night we like to think that these departed musical souls can feel the good vibrations coming from all the people still enjoying the songs they poured a bit of themselves into.

With this in mind, it would seem fitting that Michael Jackson’s Thriller should be included on everyone’s playlist. In fact we think that every Halloween party across the planet should play Thriller at the midnight witching hour!

Come on! – we know you know how it goes, sing it with us!

“It’s close to midnight and something evil’s lurking in the dark
Under the moonlight, you see a sight that almost stops your heart
You try to scream but terror takes the sound before you make it
You start to freeze as horror looks you right between the eyes
You’re paralyzed
‘Cause this is thriller, thriller night”

Regardless of personal opinion of MJ, nobody can deny that the December 2, 1983 release of the unprecedented 14 minute Thriller video is truly a great and lasting piece of Halloween candy for the senses!

It starts with a nod to vintage horror films with the classic storyline of boy & girl run out of gas in the dark woods, boy turns into horrible beast and tries to eat girl. Then we get to glimpse MJ’s humorous side as his popcorn-eating smile tells us that he is enjoying the horror movie at the Paradise. Toss in a graveyard zombie uprising that would make any full budgeted production movie proud, complete with a haunted rap performed by horror icon Vincent Price. I can hear his signature voice in my head now;

Vincent Price thriller tribute

“Darkness falls across the land
The midnight hour is close at hand
Creatures crawl in search of blood
To terrorize y’alls neighbourhoods
And whosoever shall be found
Without the soul for getting down
Must stand and face the hounds of hell
And rot inside a corpse’s shell”

Finish all that good stuff off with a surprise ending, add one last twist and you have a inspired piece of film & music art that has stood the test of time.

So this year while we celebrate Halloween, let’s all play the Thriller song or video in memory of and in tribute to Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958 – June 25, 2009) and lets make the King of Pop the Boogie Man of Halloween 2009!

Thanks for reading and have a Thriller Halloween Party!

Oh, what a great idea! I was looking for a party theme, and “Thriller” would be perfect! I’ll play Michael’s music, and decorate in a thriller theme too!

  2. Liz Says:

Heck yeah! I would have played it anyway, but let’s all do it together at midnight! Thriller is truly a Halloween necessity.

  3. Andrew Says:

Awesome! Thriller at Midnight it is then! – Count our Party in!!
Don’t be, as Mr Price said, “Found without the soul for getting down”!!

  4. Cheri Britton Says:

What a fantastic idea! I was stunned at Michael’s early death and think this is a great way to honor such a great songwriter. Thriller has always been my favorite and I’m sure it will get played more than once at my bash. I’m also going to play some Nick Cave, this is a seriously scarey musician.

  5. Melsie Says:

I LOVE this…I am definitely going to be blasting “Thriller” this Halloween at midnight. What time zone? Or just our own?

    Love Screaming Scarecrow’s articles, BTW.

  6. Chris Molnar Says:

Just your own – hey, hopefully we can get everybody to play it in their own timezone, making this a 24-hour tribute! With all the interest, I’ve created a Facebook group for this:
