Admit it: you’ve been thinking about their costumes for this year since approximately November 1st of last year. (Amiright?)
If so, then welcome to the Halloween Alliance family! We’ve been waiting on pins and needles since Thanksgiving or so for the next time we can dress up strangely without anyone at Ralph’s quietly speed-dialing 911. And now that time has come: yep, it’s time to nail down some AWESOME Halloween 2019 costume ideas.
Here’s what’s trending for the most killer Halloween ever (plus links for those of us who tend to spend 99% of our pre-Halloween time making props and eating all those Reese’s…cough):
Drive Through DIY
Nothing says fall like a Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Frappuccino. This one is super-easy: just dress in all black with a green apron, and hold up a piece of poster board with a square cut out of the middle and a Starbucks logo on it. This gives you the perfect excuse to rep the best fall drink and sip on a pumpkin spice frappuccino all night.
OC Zombie
Ten years after the release of the first Zombieland, the sequel Zombieland 2: Double Tap is slated for release in October. All characters in the Zombieland universe go by geographical aliases like Tallahassee, Wichita, and Columbus instead of their real names. Create your own Zombieland original character by dressing up as a badass postapocalyptic survivor and wearing a “Hello, My Name Is” sticker with the geographical name of your choice.
Be a Blast From the Past
It’s usually a cop-out to dress as yourself from Halloween, but you can get away with it if you add a slight twist: dress as yourself, but from the past. If you were a teenager in the nineties, it’s super simple to find great costume components in stores now, thanks to the resurgence of nineties fashion trends. Do your best to recreate a specific look from your younger years from an old photo and carry it with you for reference!
The Joker Is On You
In October, the film Joker comes out. This movie, which is the origin story of perhaps the most famous Batman villain, features Joaquin Phoenix in the titular role. However, Phoenix is far from the first actor to play the role. Past actors include Jack Nicholson, Heath Ledger, and Jared Leto, just to name a few. In honor of the movie’s release, dress as your favorite Joker incarnation, cartoon or live-action!
Meta Makeup
Instead of looking to your favorite makeup influencer for Halloween inspiration, why not pay firect homage to them? Pick your favorite influencer, preferably one who can do dramatic or costume-y looks, and dress up as them using one of their signature looks. Choose somebody really iconic. How about Angry Grandpa (RIP, you made us laugh) or Graveyard Girl, with her mane of stripey hair?
Magnificent Maleficent
Five years after the first Maleficent film, the sequel called Maleficent: Mistress of Evil will drop in October. This gives you the opportunity to go full-Maleficent. Maleficent is everything: horned, winged, evil, gorgeous, iconic. She should be channeled on Halloween, and every other day for that matter.
Make It a Double
Costumes that embrace duality are always fun. Do a split-faced character that embraces two different looks – one side is beauty makeup, and the other is creepy, spooky, or grotesque. You’ll find loads of creepy face effects on Pinterest and Instagram, so have a peek and see what’s gruesomely hot for 2019!
Be Creepy, Kooky, Mysterious, and Spooky
A new 3D computer-animated version of The Addams Family hits the big screen in October. Choose your favorite Addams character – Morticia, Wednesday, Fester – and celebrate the opportunity to dress as them and be on-trend, whether you’re influenced by the new version or the original.
Give Yourself a Break
Broken Doll makeup has trended every Halloween for a few years now, and it’s quickly becoming a classic. Add something new to the trend to stand out, whether that’s by incorporating neon, holographic effects, iridescence, glitter, or whatever else inspires you.
Be Everything and the Kitchen Sink
When asked what she wanted to be for Halloween one year, a friend’s three year old proclaimed she wanted to be a “sparkly rainbow cowboy ninja unicorn”. So her mom took her to a party store and let her go nuts and pick out whatever costume pieces appealed to her. Channel your inner 3-year old and go on a costume store rampage, picking out pieces that appeal to you and turning them into a costume that’s totally original and unique.
It’s never too early to start planning for your Halloween costume, especially if you want to go all out. Start looking at what your favorite influencers and cosplayers are doing, pick up some Halloween-appropriate makeup palettes and begin experimenting, and flex those creative muscles…and honey, slay Halloween this year like never before.
